Psychotherapy is where a psychologist through an interpersonal, safe and trusting relationship uses professional activities and/or techniques to enable people to develop self-understanding and process their emotions, as a result bringing change in their lives and/or healing.
This therapy technique uses various art forms to enable and encourage the client to self-express. We use the process of making certain art to facilitate the therapy. It is a very creative process and most of my clients have lots of fun engaging in these sessions.
A child’s most natural way of expressing and communicating is through play. Therefore we use play as a therapy technique to enable children to express their emotions. We use the child’s symbolic meanings in his or her play as a medium for understanding and communicating with the child. Play therapy can include anything from Sand Tray Therapy to playing using art, puppets, stories and any other toys. I also incorporate Play therapy techniques with the smaller children when doing Equine Assisted Psychotherapy with them.
I believe that every client is unique and therefore his or her specific therapeutic needs will be unique. My training enables me to use various different therapies, as the client’s process demands it. One size does not fit all when it comes to therapy.
